He was born in Omaha. He was one of five boys with whom Father Edward T. Flanagan began the world-famous Boys Town in Omaha. He resided there for 2 years. Some sources state that he was the very first boy and stayed at Boys Town for only 5 months before Father Flanigan found him a job on a farm in Iowa. He was the last survivor of the 5 boys.
He was the 2nd husband of Emily (Houdek) Hotovy. Married her on 9/1/1937 and they had one daughter Darlene (Divis).
