Born at Caslav, Czechoslovakia. Served in Austria and Hungary during World War I. Married in 1920 in Czechoslovakia and later came to the U.S. Information from an oral history record (Czech Heritage Collection) states that he was born in Chilum (north of Prague); in 1912 he was drafted into the Austrian Army. He deserted in 1914 near Premysl to Russian forces; he worked on a farm in Ukraine until the end of the war. He transported to Vladivostok, then via Shanghai, Hawaii, San Diego, New York, France, and Czechoslovakia he finally immigrated to the U.S. in 1919.
