In 1896, Joseph Caspar Hruska moved from Iowa to Butler County. He taught school in Bruno. He married Caroline Dvorak of Spillville, IA and settled in Abie. They later moved to David City where Joseph was County Superintendent of Schools. He served as Abie school principal until 1917, when the family moved to Omaha. Joseph and Caroline raised 11 children: eight sons and three daughters. One of their sons was Roman Hruska, U.S. Senator from Nebraska, after whom the Hruska Memorial Library in David City was named.
