Hastings, L. S. Home

1904 tax roll lists the owner as Lovell S. Hastings, Block 5, Lot 4, Miles 1st addition, value $220. The home is no longer there. District Judge Lovell Sheldon Hastings was born in Illinois in 1866. He came to Butler Co., NE, in 1878 with his parents, Henry & Linor Lytle Hastings, in 1878 and located in a sod house on a homestead southwest of David City. He married Eva Sheldon in 1893. While in his teens, he entered the law office of J.C. Roberts in David City to study law. Although his preparatory education was meager, his perserverance and intellectual capacity equipped him to pass the examination for the profession of the law before he became of age. After his admission to the bar he continued his application to work. He received recognition early in his profession. He was elected Butler Co. Attorney in 1891, NE State Senator in 1903, Mayor of David City in 1913. In 1922, he was appointed District Judge for the 5th Judicial Dist, and served in that office until his death, April 15, 1947.
