Born in David City, NE. She graduated from the University of NE with a degree in Business Administration in 1922. She worked in the Gates restaurant and bakery in downtown David City, along with her father, Gideon Gates. She also worked in the Morgan Insurance Co.

Lucile graduated from David City High School in 1922 and from the University of Nebraska College of Business Administration in 1926. When her father died in 1928, she succeeded to management of the Gates Bakery in David City and continued in that role until 1944 when the bakery closed in 1944 due to wartime shortages. In 1948 she joined Merle Morgan as a partner in Morgan Insurance Agency in David City and continued in that role until her retirement in the 1970s.
